NEWS ROUNDUP: Calls for a regional freeport & mammoth fundraising challenge

Forty organisations have signed a letter to the chancellor calling for a Freeport in the North East.

The letter, signed by businesses, councils and universities says that the freeport could “support export-focused growth worth around £2.1 billion. A wide range of organisations are backing the bid on the grounds that the project could potentially create 13,000 jobs and support regeneration ambitions in the North, as well as the move to a low carbon economy.

NE1 Announcement

The chief executive of NE1 is stepping down from the role, after 11 years with the organisation. Adrian Waddell will leave his role at the Newcastle BID company in six months, saying that now the path ahead looks more optimistic, it's the right time to step down, leaving the way clear for the successor to shape the next, exciting chapter for NE1 and the city.

And finally..

A woman from Gosforth will be walking, running and cycling 1,079 kilometres throughout March to raise money for the North East Ambulance Service. Amy Donalson wants to take on the mammoth challenge for the service after they helped her perform CPR on her fiancé. The money raised will go towards installing a defibrillator in Sunderland.

Amy’s fiancé, Lee Stephenson, suffered a cardiac arrest at their home in Gosforth on 20 March 2020, after believing the chest pains he had been experiencing all day couldn’t possibly be a heart attack due to him being just 31-years-old.

That night, Amy found herself calling 999 and putting the first aid skills she had learned at work into practice, desperately trying to save Lee’s life with the help of 999 health advisor Bradley Sanderson, whilst two ambulance crews were en-route.

Thankfully Lee is now making a steady recovery and will be supporting Amy on her mammoth challenge as much as his doctors will allow.
