WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION: How can we encourage more girls to explore the opportunities within the construction industry?

Recently, Your Homes Newcastle showed their support for Women in Construction week, seeing it as an opportunity to highlight their female colleagues and employees in the hopes of encouraging more young girls to pursue one of the many careers available within construction.

Women only make up around 14 % of people working in the industry, with a lack of engagement with youngsters and outdated ideas around traditional gender roles standing in the way.

As well as diversifying the workforce and ensuring women are being given the opportunity to explore these avenues of employment, it can't be ignored that going into someone's home is a very personal thing. And there may be factors that mean that some people would feel more comfortable if a female worker was present.

Hannah Porter applied for an apprenticeship at age 16, inspired by her Uncle who had done the same thing. But without him she wouldn't have known this was something she could do, and believes that more should be done in schools to let all youngsters know what opportunities are available to them.
