POACHERS: Criminal snared by police

A suspected poacher was snared in a trap by police after driving through a hedge in a bid to escape being caught.
At about 10pm on Monday police received a call from staff at Woolsington Hall in Newcastle reporting poachers on the grounds of the estate. Officers were deployed to the area while the landowner manoeuvred his vehicle to prevent the men from leaving the fields. But in a desperate bid to escape justice, the men got into their own vehicle and drove straight at the landowner.
They narrowly missed him before driving through a hedge and made their escape out of the area as police officers arrived at the scene. But the vehicle was quickly located in the Durham area and police officers followed in an unmarked vehicle before they eventually pounced and stopped the vehicle. The driver was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving and the Suzuki Jimny was seized alongside a haul of poaching equipment.
Chief Inspector Ian Cutty, of Northumbria Police, has praised the response of officers and the efforts of the landowner who made the call. He said: “Poaching is not a victimless crime. It damages fields, fences and those involved often use dogs to indiscriminately kill wildlife. It is illegal for a reason and officers in rural communities are working with landowners to try and identify those involved in this type of activity.
“What is most concerning about this particular incident is the report that a vehicle has been driven directly at the landowner and the fled the area at speed. Behaviour like this could lead to serious injury or even death and I want to praise the work of officers who helped identify the vehicle involved. They have showed a dogged determination to track the car involved in the incident, bring it to a stop and bring a suspect into custody.
“Our investigation will continue but we hope our quick response reassures landowners that we will do all we can to defend your property against poachers.”
The 34-year-old man arrested has since been released under investigation pending further enquiries.
