A senior officer has praised the public after a violent street altercation led to a suspect being arrested – with weapons and drugs seized.

Officers received seven separate calls about an incident that was rapidly unfolding outside an address in Jarrow town centre about 9.45pm on Wednesday.

It was reported that a man was in possession of a machete and there was a disturbance in the street involving two groups of people who were known to each other. Thanks to the public’s quick reporting, police arrived at the scene within four minutes – and a 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray. He remains in custody at this time.

A search of a nearby address resulted in officers seizing a number of weapons including a Samurai sword, as well as a quantity of cannabis. Damage was also caused to a vehicle parked in the street as part of the disturbance. An investigation is ongoing to trace all individuals involved.

Chief Inspector Nicola Wearing, of Northumbria Police, said: “This was clearly a serious and violent incident in the street that caused significant alarm and distress to families in the area. We always say that the public are our eyes and ears – and that proved to be the case on this occasion as their calls allowed us to deploy resources to the area within minutes.

“An investigation is ongoing into the dispute, with both groups involved believed to be known to each other. Clearly, this type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and we will take swift and robust action against anybody involved in violent disorder. Our enquiries at that location also led to us seizing a number of weapons and a quantity of drugs.

“I’d like to thank those who got in touch with us to alert us to the incident, your actions were instrumental in us detaining a suspect and vital evidence that will assist our investigation. We would always ask anybody who witnesses this type of disorder to report it to police.”

The man arrested will be interviewed by detectives as part of the investigation.
