THE NEXT PHASE: We explore how people might be feeling as lockdown eases as well as reflecting on the opening of schools

Dr Gavin Morgan joins us to discuss the next phase of lockdown easing, and we’re reflecting on how the past three weeks have been since the opening of schools.

As much as we are looking forward to getting back out there and seeing loved ones again, for some this will be quite an anxious time as we try to get back to our old ways but with coronavirus still around. We've been living with some form of government guidelines for over year, which means many of us will have picked up new habits and got used to a different way of life.

As we head into this phase of easing lockdown, I then asked Dr Morgan what are some things people can do to help themselves if they aren't feeling completely confident about life returning to normal.

In our first step out of lockdown, the schools opened their doors to all children three weeks ago, with three areas in the North East seeing a rise in coronavirus cases since then. Sunderland, Northumberland and South Tyneside all saw an increase after the schools reopened, but Prime Minister Boris Johnson had said that this was to be expected. The director of public health for South Tyneside Tom Hall said case numbers are not overwhelming or difficult to manage and had not yet seen other warning signs that the situation was getting out of control, such as added pressure on adult social care or the hospital trust. Many remain confident that opening up the schools was the right move.
