AT YOUR LEISURE: Leisure centres in the North East are working hard to get kids back into exercise after a long break

Leisure centres in the North East are working hard to get kids back into exercise after a long break.

Leisure centres across the region were able to open back up again as lockdown restrictions eased on the 12th of April. Nigel Dodds is the strategic manager for sport and leisure in Durham, and said he and the team were thrilled to be able to welcome people back to their fifteen leisure centres across the county.

Concerns had previously been raised about the activity levels of children throughout lockdown. It is estimated that around 2/3 hadn't been getting the recommended 60 minutes of exercise a day, with most not even managing 30 minutes. And there is likely to be a whole generation of youngsters that have never even been in a swimming pool.
Coronavirus restrictions do apply when in the leisure centres, including social distancing, wearing a mask when in the building and not exercising, and phoning ahead of your visit so there are no capacity issues. When it comes to swimming, the changing rooms are only available on exit of the pool, so you should shower at home before a swim and arrive in your swimming gear. There will be makeshift changing areas at the side of the pool where you can safely leave your belongings.
