MARSDEN QUARRY: Plans approved for new washing facility

MARSDEN QUARRY: Plans approved for new washing facility

A ‘unique’ application to help Marsden Quarry ‘maximise profit’ has been given the green light.

Some concerns had been raised about the possible impact the addition of a new washing facility at the site, in Coast Road, would have on families living nearby.

However these fears were largely soothed after bosses at the business agreed to ensure it was moved further away from existing properties.

“What this is for is to maximise the profit from the quarry and the bringing in of material,” said principal planning officer Peter Cunningham.

“This is about maximising the output – material is excavated around the quarry and it needs to be washed and sorted.

“They dredge for sand that’s used in the building trade and this will enable sand to be recycled and be reused.

“It’s quite unique and it’s very expensive, so I’m told, and quite a complicated process.”

Cunningham was speaking at this week’s (Monday, April 19) meeting of South Tyneside Council’s Planning Committee, which was held by videolink and broadcast via YouTube.

The application was approved unanimously by the 13-strong panel.
