NEWS ROUNDUP: Ian Mearns on European Super League & councillors rally against banning remote meetings

Ian Mearns on European Super League and councillors rally against plans to stop them from being able to hold meetings remotely.

A further 83 coronavirus cases have been reported in the North East. Newcastle reported the most cases with 18 whilst Hartlepool reported the fewest with 2.

Remote meetings

Councillors in Redcar & Cleveland have described the Government's decision not to allow virtual meetings to continue as appalling and inexplicable. Members said the decision was complete madness as the threat of coronavirus is still very real. The ministry of housing, communities and local government are now gathering evidence on whether the use of remote technology should be permanent. The Government introduced new regulations last year allowing councils and other bodies to hold meetings online instead of face-to-face as a response to the coronavirus pandemic.

But in a recent letter to council leaders Local Government Minister Luke Hall said with the Government’s legislative programme already under pressure, and mindful of progress being made with covid vaccines and the roadmap out of lockdown, it had decided not to bring forward emergency legislation at this time.

Now the High Court is being asked to rule on the legal position as to whether existing legislation covering council meetings would allow them to lawfully take place using remote technology as last year’s legislation does not extend beyond May 6.

The uncertainty has already led Redcar and Cleveland Council to move its annual general meeting forward from May 27 to April 28. (Words from Local Democracy Reporter Stuart Arnold)
