FOODCYCLE BENWELL: Combatting food poverty & food waste all under one roof

FoodCycle Benwell - combatting food poverty and food waste under one roof

Over 6 and a half million tonnes of food is wasted every year in the UK, that amounts to an eye watering £10.2 billion. What makes this figure even harder to digest, is that the amount of families trapped in food poverty is increasing, with many struggling to afford even one hot meal a day.

This is now a serious issue in the North East. In the past, low wages across the region were balanced out by cheaper living costs, but over the past few years, rent and house prices have been rising at the same rate as London, without an increase in wages.

But there is one organisation on a mission to right some of these wrongs. FoodCycle make healthy, good quality food available to those most in need, using food that would otherwise be wasted. In 2020 alone they've saved 359 tonnes of food from being tossed in the bin. They've now launched a new project in Benwell, in the West of Newcastle, providing hot takeaway meals to anyone who needs them.
But it's just about the food. For people living alone, it's a time to socialise and have a good chat, combatting some of the chronic loneliness being felt by people in our communities. But the challenges brought on by the pandemic have made this aspect of Foodcycles projects much more challenging.
This project is being hosted at the Riverside Community Health Project in Benwell, and is serving up between 7 and 8 pm every evening and if anyone does have any surplus food available, donating it to foodcycle will ensure it's put to good use.
