ST OSWALD’S: A Newcastle hospice is facing a volunteer crisis in their charity shops

St Oswald’s Hospice - A Newcastle hospice is facing a volunteer crisis in their charity shops.

Most of our local hospices rely heavily on the kindness of their community to survive. But fundraising efforts took a massive hit during the pandemic as charity shops had to close, and events had to be cancelled. St Oswald's Hospice in Gosforth, Newcastle were thrilled to be able to open up their shops as lockdown eased but are now encountering a serious volunteer shortage, hindering efforts to generate that much needed income.

Anita told me that the shops need anywhere between 12 and 20 volunteers each to run. And now that our high streets are open again, it's crucial that charity shops are able to utilise this time now that people are heading back to city and town centres. But for anyone unsure about volunteering, it doesn't have to be a huge commitment, with an hour or two a week making all the difference.
Though the challenges of the pandemic have seemed monumental at times, the community and all those who hold the hospice dear have rallied around them, ensuring their survival through a difficult time, and Anita and the team have been overwhelmed by people's generosity.
