YOUR DREAM HOME: A scheme in Durham wants to give you the opportunity to build your dream home

Custom Build Homes are working with Durham County Council to help you build your own home!

Heather's team at Durham Council want people to get excited about buying a home and settling down in the county.

As part of a pilot scheme, potential home owners will have the opportunity to design their own house on the edge of Durham City.

By working in partnership with Custom Build Homes, the project aims to let people's dreams of building their own house come true, without having to worry about things like power, drainage and other utilities which have already been taken care of.

For so many of us, buying a house will be the biggest financial purchase of our lives, and it's not too often that you get to have a say in what that will look like.
As our towns and cities start to recover from the financial devastation of the pandemic, it is hoped that projects like this one will help to get people excited about living in Durham, and encourage them to stay.
Heather told me that as part of Durham's Towns and Villages Strategy, the council is committed to improving the quality and mix of housing across the county.
And, as part of that ambition, this project is accessible to everyone, whether you're a first time buyer or looking for your retirement home.
The pilot with Custom Build Homes also offers the possibility of future opportunities. Cllr James Rowlandson, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for resources, investments and assets, said:
“This pilot scheme is a fantastic opportunity for buyers to build their dream home and I’m sure the plots will be in high demand.
“We’re pleased to be working with Custom Build Homes to help guide buyers through this process and are
excited about further opportunities to come in County Durham.”
