NEWS ROUNDUP: Covid patients are down & the floor is yours in Durham

Coronavirus hospitalisations are down in Newcastle and the floor is yours in Durham as PCC invites questions at accountability meeting.

The number of Covid patients being treated at Newcastle’s hospitals has dropped noticeably. The number of patients reached as high as 85 inJuly, but has dropped to around 50. Cases of coronavirus are now on the decline.

The Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust also confirmed that, while some staff are still self-isolating, the number of employees forced to stay at home as a result of the ‘pingdemic’ has also reduced.

A spokesperson said: “While the overall numbers of Covid patients we are treating has started to go down, we are still admitting patients into hospital on a daily basis and across the trust we remain very busy with high levels of patients requiring urgent or emergency care.”

Transparency from the PCC
Durham's Police and Crime Commissioner has said she is committed to being open and transparent in her duties, and is inviting residents to ask questions at an accountability meeting this month.
Until now accountability meetings have not been open to the public or recorded, but the newly elected PCC wants to move forward by being more open and accountable.
The recorded meetings will enable residents to see how the accountability process works and the role the PCC plays in delivering an efficient and effective Police Service by scrutinising the performance of the force and ensuring it is responsive to the needs of the residents of County Durham and Darlington.
From claps to slaps
The number of NHS staff being verbally and physically abused has soared. 900 incidents have been reported in Newcastle alone.
Long waiting times due to staff shortages and dealing with the backlog has been cited as one of the reasons.
