FREEDOM DENIED: We speak to Jim from Salt Market Social on what was supposed to be “freedom day”

We catch up with Jim from Salt Market Social on what was supposed to be “freedom day,” when all coronavirus restrictions were due to be lifted.

What came to be known as freedom day was when all remaining coronavirus restrictions were to be eased, giving businesses and whole industries the chance to make the most of the summer trade and start their road to recovery.

However, due to the accelerated spread of the delta variant of coronavirus through the population, the government made the decision to postpone the freedom date to enable more people to get vaccinated, and to better assess if this variant is dangerous and has the potential to lead to hospitalisations and more deaths.

Over in North Shields, the Salt Market Social was gearing up to welcome back up to 400 patrons on the 21st of June, but were disappointed to hear that this could no longer go ahead.

It is believed that over half a million jobs across hospitality have gone throughout the pandemic so far with tens of billions of pounds lost.
Some businesses have been able to adapt in various ways, utilising outdoor dining and enhancing take options but sadly 72% of businesses fear they face permanent closure if sufficient support isn't provided.
The road to recovery is going to be a long one, but from what we've seen so far people are certainly keen to get back out there. And people like Jim already have plenty of ideas up their sleeves to make the most of the rest of the year and welcome people back in style when that freedom day finally comes around.
