A 30 year old man has appeared in court charged with the rape of a 15-year-old girl in Newcastle.
Just after 2am on Sunday, May 23, police received a report that the teenager had been raped in a car after being picked up by a stranger in the city centre.
She reported that she had travelled into the Monument Metro Station as she attempted to make her way to her home address in Cowgate.
It was reported that she walked around the city centre before speaking to a number of people who walked with her towards the Haymarket.
But between 1.15am and 2am she was approached by a man in a dark car near to the Haymarket station who offered to give her a lift.
She accepted the offer and the vehicle has travelled towards Cowgate, before it was reported that the driver parked on a street in Blakelaw and raped her in the back seat.
He has then dropped her off at her home address and left the area in the vehicle at which point the teenager has reported the attack.
Northumbria Police swiftly launched an investigation and over the weekend a 30-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident.
On Sunday he was charged with one count of rape of a female under the age of 16 and one count of sexual assault by penetration.
Jahangir Ali, 30, of Hutton Street, Gosforth, appeared before magistrates in Newcastle on Monday 31 May where he was bailed to appear at crown court on June 28.
Speaking after the man was arrested at the weekend, Detective Sergeant Damon Hall continued to encourage anyone with concerns to speak to police.
He said: “We are continuing to offer the teenager all the support she needs and we hope this arrest can offer some reassurance to both her and the wider community.
“There is already a highly visible policing presence in the city centre since the re-opening of our night time economy and if anyone has any concerns we would ask you to approach our officers.”
Ali is under strict bail conditions including an electronic tag and a curfew
