NATIONAL NEWS ROUNDUP: COVID deaths highest since March AND social care reform plans announced

Here is your latest national headline update including an increase in the number of COVID deaths according to the ONS, Boris Johnson announces his social care reform plans, and a ‘lack of clarity’ surrounding mandatory vaccinations for care home staff.

The number of deaths involving coronavirus registered each week has climbed to its highest level for five months. A total of six hundred and sixty eight COVID deaths registered in the week ending the twenty seventh of August, according to the ONS. This is up seventeen percent on the previous week, and is the highest number since the end of March.

Boris Johnson has laid out plans to reform health and care funding, which will see money going to the NHS as well as to help people avoid crippling adult social care costs. The PM set out how he aims to tackle the social care crisis in England by increasing national insurance to raise around ten billion pounds.

An adult social care provider has hit out at a lack of clarity from the Government over its mandatory vaccination policy for care home staff. The Government has said that from November eleventh, all staff must be vaccinated to work, unless they are medically exempt. But Care England said there is no sign of promised guidance concerning those who don't have to get the jab.

Professor Martin Green, Care England chief executive, said: “Providers are in the midst of a perfect storm.

“The sector is operating against a backdrop of a multitude of workforce pressures and this lack of clarity only compounds these issues.

“We implore the department to remain transparent with the sector and give it the help that it needs, as after all this is a centrally imposed policy which the sector is now having to manage, largely without central support.”

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesman said: “The vast majority of care staff are already vaccinated and, ahead of the November deadline, we are focusing on encouraging even more staff to get jabbed to protect their colleagues and those they care for.”
