NEWS ROUNDUP: UK’s covid hotspot & tributes to Middlesbrough councillor

The North East is currently the UK’s coronavirus hotspot and tributes have poured in for a Middlesbrough councillor who passed away this week.

Public health bosses in the North East are keen for residents to continue wearing masks in shops and on public transport once the final lockdown restrictions have eased. An increase in coronavirus cases means the region is now the UK's covid hotspot.

On Tuesday a joint statement was released by Directors of Public health representing the Local Authority 7 councils of Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead, Sunderland and Durham.

The directors say that “we will all have to learn to live with the virus, but we still have a duty to do so responsibly”.

Devolution deal confusion
A devolution deal to unite the North East councils under one mayor has caused some confusion. There is apparently a package already on the table for the plans but leaders south of the river have said they haven't signed up for any such agreement yet, but have said they are open to the prospect.
June Goodchild has passed away
Tributes have poured in for a community activist and Middlesbrough councillor who sadly passed away. June Goodchild died on Tuesday July 6th at the age of 79 following a short illness. Councillor Antony High said she embodied the community spirit not just of Easterside, but of Middlesbrough as a whole.

Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston said: "June's warmth and constructive directness touched so many lives in Easterside and beyond.

"She had a lovely family who will miss her - and we all will.

"Thank you June for being part of our lives, it was a privilege to know you."
