Former councillor Dipu Ahad has been jailed for stalking and council leader warns of consequences of forcing councillors to return to in person meetings.
A councillor who claimed he was seeking justice for a stalking victim has been jailed, after police found he was the one responsible for the harassment. 41 year old Dipu Ahad, a former councillor in Newcastle, has been handed a 14 month custodial sentence.
End of remote meetings
Forcing councillors back to in person meetings will come at a major cost to local authorities according to the leader of Newcastle City Council. A high court rejected appeals for online meetings to continue beyond May. There are concerns this will mean extra kit and room hire is necessary due to social distancing rules, as well as posing a risk to people's health.
Happy birthday Coffee Pot No.1
One of the world’s oldest working railway steam locomotives has been celebrating its 150th birthday. Coffee Pot No. 1 was built in 1871 on Teesside to be used at Betchworth Quarry in Surrey. The train now resides at Beamish Museum.
