NEWS ROUNDUP: Freedom day has arrived & levelling up in Redcar & Cleveland

Freedom day has arrived, which means many coronavirus restrictions have be lifted and “levelling up” ambitions outlined for Redcar & Cleveland.

Coronavirus restrictions have eased on Freedom day, meaning masks are no longer required by law, capacity limits can be lifted and all remaining businesses that were previously closed can now open. Aaron Mellor, who operates Digital in Newcastle said this is a huge moment but there's still a long road to recovery.

England moved to the fourth and final stage of Boris Johnson’s roadmap out of lockdownon Monday meaning that many of the rules that dominated people’s lives over the past 18 months have been scrapped.

Gateshead Council leader Martin Gannon says that he agrees with the economy opening back up but that mask wearing and social distancing should still be mandatory.

He said: “The Government should have continued with mandatory public health requirements around masks.

“The virus hasn’t gone away, there is a further transmission danger and a danger of further mutations.

“Literally everyone I have spoken to thinks ‘what the hell are they [Government] doing?’

“Just wear a bloody mask, we’re not asking people to give up a kidney, just wear a mask.”

Redcar & Cleveland
Millions of pounds worth of levelling up funds has been allocated to Redcar and Cleveland to invest in town centres and public transport. However there are concerns that the most deprived areas could be short changes with the plans, with some saying that people should be at the heart of the investments.
Self isolation rules
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen is calling on the government to drop self isolation rules for people who have been double jabbed. The number of people being pinged by the NHS app has caused issues in some workplaces such as Nissan where it is believed hundreds were told to self isolate.
