Freedom day has arrived, which means many coronavirus restrictions have be lifted and “levelling up” ambitions outlined for Redcar & Cleveland.
Coronavirus restrictions have eased on Freedom day, meaning masks are no longer required by law, capacity limits can be lifted and all remaining businesses that were previously closed can now open. Aaron Mellor, who operates Digital in Newcastle said this is a huge moment but there's still a long road to recovery.
England moved to the fourth and final stage of Boris Johnson’s roadmap out of lockdownon Monday meaning that many of the rules that dominated people’s lives over the past 18 months have been scrapped.
Gateshead Council leader Martin Gannon says that he agrees with the economy opening back up but that mask wearing and social distancing should still be mandatory.
He said: “The Government should have continued with mandatory public health requirements around masks.
“The virus hasn’t gone away, there is a further transmission danger and a danger of further mutations.
“Literally everyone I have spoken to thinks ‘what the hell are they [Government] doing?’
“Just wear a bloody mask, we’re not asking people to give up a kidney, just wear a mask.”
