SMARTER SLEEP: One NHS Trust in the North East is here to help you get your head down
How to get better sleep.
A study conducted by the Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust has been trying to assess how to get better sleep, especially for inpatients.
Getting a good nights rest can be challenging at the best of times, with kids, pets, hectic lifestyles and just the general grind of trying to get everything done getting in the way. And if you've found yourself in hospital, decent sleep is even more crucial, assisting your body in it's recovery process.
One of the aims of the study was to try and keep people off sleep medication. Short term, popping a pill every time you need to get your head down might not do you much harm, but long term use could cause some issues.
But by changing certain behaviours, and environments , the study found that the number of sleeping tablets being prescribed on designated wards dropped by almost a quarter with staff saying that they felt more confident about helping people sleep better without needing to use medications.
Alastair says we need to be thinking about sleeping actively. Bad sleep is easy to come by, and can be caused by so many things, that then impacts our daily lives. But this NHS trust has made it easy for you, by compiling their findings and making them accessible for everyone.
