“Feral” vandals have been slammed after a bench honouring the work of NHS heroes during the coronavirus pandemic was found up-ended in a Gateshead beauty spot.

A concerned member of the public shared a photograph of the bench, which had been tampered with, on Facebook.

Furious residents commenting on the post, which was shared on Saturday, slammed the “mindless vandalism”.

Another condemned the “pointless vandalism of a lovely area”.

Ward councillor Brenda Clelland condemned the vandalism saying the bench was paid for by a local charity.

She said:”Someone’s gone to a lot of time and effort to up-end this bench situated on the river front walkway at the Staiths.

“Its not only a pleasant place to sit, admire the view of the Staiths and the river, but was a gesture of gratitude from our community, paid for by Big Local, the Teams-based community charity, towards the NHS staff who worked so hard to keep us all safe during the pandemic and are still working flat out.

“I’m shocked and saddened by this senseless vandalism, and I hope someone will have the decency to admit responsibility – but I’m not holding my breath.”
The bench has since been fixed back into place.
