PROVIDING OPTIMISM: The story of sport in 2020

The year 2020 was 12 months where sport took a backseat as the Coronavirus pandemic turned our lives upside down.

However, the return of football in June did provide some optimism at a time when people across the country needed it the most.

The Premier League and the EFL finished their seasons, as well as supporters being treated to the end of the Champions League and Europa League.

Twelve months on and the UK’s vaccination program provides hope of a brighter future, here we look back at the biggest sporting moments of the last year.

Liverpool Champions

Liverpool’s 30-year wait for a top-flight title came to an end as the Reds stormed to their first ever Premier League trophy.

There were suggestions that the season may have been null and voided but once the restart was given the green light it was only a matter of time before Liverpool were confirmed as champions.

Jurgen Klopp led them to their 19th top-flight title and ended a long wait on the red half of Merseyside.

Avoiding Relegation

There was also drama at the bottom of the Premier League as Aston Villa avoided relegation on the final day of the season.

Dean Smith’s side were seven points from safety in early July but managed a four game unbeaten run when push came to shove.

Having spent £118 million on new players at the start of the season, staying up was huge for the club and has allowed them to grow in to the current season.

Leeds Promoted

The 16 year wait was finally over.

Leeds United were promoted back to the Premier League following West Brom’s 2-1 defeat against Huddersfield Town.

The Whites went on to be crowned champions and were given a guard of honour by the side that denied them promotion the previous year, Derby County.

Leeds have since gone on to surprise many in the Premier League by their unwillingness to change their style of play and have kept their supporters thoroughly entertained.
