RELISHING IT: Tommy Fleetwood looking for inspiration in Tokyo

RELISHING IT: Tommy Fleetwood looking for inspiration in Tokyo

PA Richard Sellers

England’s Tommy Fleetwood is relishing his Olympic challenge and hopes to find some inspiration from the world’s best athletes at the Tokyo games. While the likes of Rory McIlroy (Ireland) is a reluctant participant and Sergio Garcia (Spain) has skipped the Games altogether in order to chase Ryder Cup qualification, Fleetwood is looking forward to representing Great Britain in Tokyo.

The Ryder Cup star has had just two top-10 finishes this season and while he made the cut in three of the four majors his highest finish was the joint-33rd he managed at The Open at Royal St George’s on Sunday.

“I need to look at where my game is and take the good stuff,” he said.

“Hopefully I can keep pressing on with the good stuff I feel is coming with my game.

“The funny thing in golf is you never know your best game is going to turn up, you are always waiting for it all the time.

“I am excited to be surrounded by the best athletes the nation and the world has to offer. That can only be an inspiring part in itself.

“I think being around those people will make me a better athlete and golfer.

“I feel amazing to call myself an Olympian. It is an amazing experience and a chance to do something special.”

While Fleetwood was in a restricted four-person bubble for The Open he has been accustomed to the more relaxed protocols on the PGA Tour this year.

However, he does not think he will have a problem adjusting to particularly stringent conditions being imposed in Japan due to coronavirus.

And he will have no qualms about mixing in the athletes’ village.

“I have spent a lot of time in America where there is not really a bubble. It has been pretty free over there,” he added.

“I am fine with it. I generally have decent company with me. I think the guys are just going to turn up and prepare for the golf tournament like we always do.

“Preparation-wise it will be the same. I will enjoy being there and meeting some new people.

“We have four Majors and an Olympics. Those guys are waiting every four years for an Olympics. It is such a huge thing to them.

“I will be in the village somewhere wandering around and taking in that energy and their (the athletes’) focus.”
