WILLOCK WONDER: On-loan Joe scores in sixth successive game

WILLOCK WONDER: On-loan Joe scores in sixth successive game

Joe Willock once again scored for Newcastle United as they beat Sheffield United in their final home game of the season.

He headed in the winning goal in this game meaning he's scored in six straight games - the youngest player to ever do so in the league at 21 years old.

Willock is on loan from Arsenal and Steve Bruce has expressed an interest in signing him permanently.

However, the Magpies manager was quick to add that they must respect the fact he's still an Arsenal player.

"It's a double-edged sword. We have to respect he's Arsenal's player. If we can, we'd love to bring him here.," Bruce said post-match.

"Let's see what we can do because he's exactly what we needed. Joe has still got a lot to learn but we have given him a freedom and a licence to get forward. He is a young player enjoying his football."

The game was played in front of 10,000 Newcastle fans with coronavirus restrictions easing earlier this month.

They will have enjoyed watching that Joe Willock goal as they seen their team beat already relegated Sheffield United 1-0.

It's the first time fans have been allowed into St James' Park in over a year.

Top half aspirations for Toon - Bruce

Bruce was quick to praise the returning spectators and looked ahead to next season, despite speculation regarding his future at the helm.

"The supporters were terrific. When you think there were only 10,000 here, the difference is amazing.

"We could have put it to bed a bit earlier. Some of our play in the first half was very decent.

"We all aspire to take Newcastle into the top half of the table. We have to be actively better than just surviving. We have got the makings of a half-decent team."

Whether he is allowed to continue building the team is another matter.
